The downsides are real, though. Diesel degrades over time — fuel stored for more than 12 months starts to lose stability and can cause injector and filter problems. That means rotation and treatment are necessary if the generator sits unused for long stretches, which is exactly what happens with a backup system that only runs during outages. Diesel also tends to produce more emissions than propane or natural gas, and the generator units themselves are louder and require more frequent maintenance.

Natural gas connects directly to your home’s existing gas line, which means your generator has an effectively unlimited fuel supply for as long as the utility maintains pressure. No tank to monitor, no delivery to schedule, no 80% fill rule to account for. During a typical Tarrant County outage — a summer storm, a downed line, a localized grid failure — natural gas just runs.
The operating cost advantage is substantial. At $0.15 to $0.40 per kilowatt-hour, natural gas is roughly 40% the cost of propane for the same power output. The American Gas Association projects that gap to hold through 2040.
Having natural gas service at your address and having sufficient gas line capacity for a whole-house standby generator are two different things. This is a detail that gets skipped in most online comparisons, but it matters in practice — especially in some of Fort Worth’s older neighborhoods.
A whole-house standby generator places a meaningful demand on your home’s gas supply. The upfront installation cost gets most of the attention, but the fuel cost picture over several years of ownership is what really separates natural gas from propane for most Tarrant County homeowners.
A natural gas whole-house standby generator costs roughly $0.85 to $1.50 per hour to run. A comparable propane unit runs $1.50 to $2.50 per hour. On a daily basis, that’s approximately $90 for natural gas versus $220 for propane. So propane costs more to install and more to operate. The trade-off, as noted, is energy independence and the peace of mind that comes with on-site fuel storage.
There’s also a sizing consideration that affects long-term cost. An oversized generator running at low load wastes fuel. An undersized generator that can’t handle your HVAC load in 105°F heat is essentially useless during the outages that matter most. Getting the size right — through a proper load analysis before installation — is what makes the fuel cost numbers above actually accurate for your home rather than theoretical averages. A generator sized for your real load, running at appropriate capacity, performs the way the specs say it will.

A 26 kW system running efficiently on natural gas at the right load will cost significantly less over time than a mismatched system of any fuel type running at the wrong capacity.
